Course Overview
SSDIS01007 Basic Skills for the Food Industry Skill SetThis course is a State based (SA) skill set that has been developed by the Government of South Australia.
This skillset provides you with a deep dive into the hospitality industry with skills in food hygiene, safe food handling, and food preparation.
You will be involved in practical hands-on training to make a variety of dishes using food preparation equipment and cookery methods. You will also be supported with relevant employability skills to improve your opportunities to gain employment.
Units of Competency
● SITHCCC023 Use food preparation equipment● SITHCCC027 Prepare dishes using basic methods of cookery
● SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety
● SITXFSA006 Participate in safe food handling practices
● SITXWHS005 Participate in safe work practices
Course Fees
Subsidised Training$70.00 participant contribution.
This course is Supported by the Government of South Australia. You may be eligible for subsidised training if you live or work in South Australia, and are:
● an Australian or New Zealand citizen
● a permanent Australian resident, or
● an eligible visa holder
You also need to be:
● 16 years or over and not enrolled at school

Payment of Course Fees
On completion of your online enrolment, you will be asked for your payment preference of Credit Card, or Invoice. Your issued invoice will contain all information required for payment. SYC accepts two payment methods including credit card and bank transfer.Note:
● Credit Card payment will attract a 0.7% surcharge additional to their course fees.
● Surcharge amount will not be refunded in the event a refund is requested.
● Invoices are to be paid within 14 days, or 24 hours prior to commencement of the course, whichever comes first.
Delivery
Duration: 4 days per week, 9:00am – 4:00pm for 2 weeks (8 days)Delivery Mode: Hybrid – Face-to-Face classroom based theory, combined with onsite practical activity
Entry Requirements/Pre-requisites
● Must complete an Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN)● All learners must provide their USI upon enrolment.
● All participants of the course must provide at least 1 for of photo identification
Inhouse Student Support
SYC identifies individual support requirements during the initial intake/enrolment process. During your course, your trainer/assessor will provide based on your requirements. SYC also can provide additional support for LLND, language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills where identified during initial intake processes, or during your course.Our students are encouraged to seek support and discuss their learning needs and requirements with their trainer and assessor so that the right support strategies are put in place for the best possibility learning outcome.
Students accessing subsided training are eligible to access additional Success and Wellbeing Support Services (SWS). SWS is an initiative of SkillsSA and the Government of South Australia and supports you with study plans, flexible study delivery, after-hours support and guidance, which also extends after your training is complete. Accreditation and Employment Pathways
AccreditationOn successful completion of all assessment requirements, the student will be issued with a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for SITHCCC023 Use food preparation equipment, SITHCCC027 Prepare dishes using basic methods of cookery, SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety, SITXFSA006 Participate in safe food handling practices & SITXWHS005 Participate in safe work practices.
Employment Pathways
Students completing this skill set general gain employment in restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops or may choose to further their education by enrolling in Certificate II in Hospitality or commence a Certificate III trade through an apprenticeship.
This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, food and beverage and gaming.
What will I need?
All course learning resources, equipment and tools used for assessment are provided by SYC and are at no cost to students enrolled in the course. Specialised PPE required to complete assessment task will also be provided by SYC.Location Details
